From Greenport to Jackson: The Expanding Landscape of the Uncommon Art Residency

Greetings from Jackson, Wyoming…where the air is crisp, the mountains hum with inspiration, and the possibilities are endless.

As I sit here in the lobby of the Anvil Hotel, the Wyoming outpost of our ever-growing Uncommon Art Residency, I can't help but reflect on how far this program has come. What began in 2017 as a small, heartfelt experiment tucked inside the walls of Sound View Greenport has grown into something much more expansive. A network of artists, thinkers, and community members reaching from the East End of Long Island to the Tetons of the West.

A Creative Movement Rooted in Place

Erik Warner founded the Uncommon Art Residency with a simple yet profound intention: to offer artists time and space to explore their practice in deeply inspiring environments. The locations themselves, the coast of the North Fork and the mountain magic of Jackson, act not just as backdrops, but as collaborators in the creative process.

Our residency model is simple: invite artists to stay, create, and connect. In return, they engage with the local community in a way that feels natural to them, whether through open studios, performances, talks, or entirely original offerings. Over the past seven years, we've welcomed contemporary painters, composers, musicians, playwrights, fiber artists, death doulas, and wild-hearted craftspeople who have all added their unique voices to the growing chorus of Uncommon Art alumni.

Celebrating Our Second Annual Exhibition in Jackson Hole

This summer marks the second year of our Uncommon Art Show at the Center for the Arts in Jackson Hole, and we're proud to say it's becoming a signature moment in our annual calendar. On view through September 10, 2025, this multidisciplinary exhibition features work by a dynamic roster of artists from both Greenport and Jackson residencies.

We'll be gathering on Thursday, August 14, for the official reception from 5 pm to 8 pm and an Uncommon Art Residency Talk from 6 pm to 7 pm (calling all artists!). We hope you can join us for a night filled with incredible art, community conversation, and light bites provided by our friends at Glorietta Trattoria. You'll have the chance to meet residency founder Erik Warner, The Center advocate & collaborator Bronwyn, and myself, as we dive into the history of the residency, share updates on where we're headed, and spotlight opportunities for local artists to engage on both coasts.

This year's exhibiting artists include:

  • Keren Anavy
  • Rebecca Borlan
  • Jeremy Dennis
  • Kym Fulmer
  • Claire Harnenz
  • Brianna Hernández
  • Lori Hepner
  • Amy Hoagland
  • Tom Holmes
  • Brian Kaspr
  • Kerry Sharkey Miller
  • Estefany Molina
  • Robyn Moore
  • Jon Roberts
  • Lila Steffan
  • Colleen McCubbin Stepanic
  • Nolan Tredway

You can also view and purchase artwork through the Center's website.

The Uncommon Art Show is made possible through a collaboration between the Center for the Arts, Anvil Hotel, Sound View Greenport, and Teton ArtLab.

One Residency, Two Coasts, Dozens of Stories

The power of this residency isn't just in the work produced, it's in the experience. I think of Colleen McCubbin Stepanic, the first artist to participate in both residencies (Jackson & Greenport). Her woven paintings are shaped by snowfall and sea breezes alike. Or Brianna L. Hernández, whose artist talk as a death doula and visual storyteller helped crack open conversations we didn't even know we needed. Their reflections remind me that what we offer is more than space—it's permission. Permission to pause. To dig deep. To connect in ways that matter. To create. To be inspired and to inspire others.
Looking ahead, we're excited to grow our alumni network in meaningful ways, providing past residents with the opportunity to explore both of our residency sites, deepen their practices, and cross-pollinate ideas from coast to coast. My mind instantly thinks of Franco Cuttica's driftwood elk sculpture, created on the North Fork and currently installed in Jackson at The Center for the Arts. We are also looking forward to adding an art show in Greenport for our residents in the coming year!
